Abeid Hamisi – A Man of the People

Know your Deputy Sub County Administrator – Abeid Hamisi

Its awesome to have this chance to share with you. So, how has it been being Deputy Sub County Administrator (DSCA)? It has been great so far. Having the opportunity of serving my county in this position after working in the Education sector since my early career days is an honor and privilege.

Education sector you say? How long were you there? I have been a teacher since the early 90’s until my appointment as a DSCA. So, its just over 20 years.

Let me take you back to your first job. What was it exactly? After my O-levels, i worked as a casual labourer at local water company in Taveta. During my time there, which was about half a year, we were laying down water pipes from Njoro springs to supply the entire Taveta sub county. To date, when i drive in Taveta, I can vividly remember where I did my work, which still has a lot of significance to date.

So far, how has your experience been working for the County Government? Compared to my time as a teacher, it definitely demands a lot since we have to tap in a different kind of skill set. I am now involved squarely in various tasks which have no parallel to the teaching profession but I am relishing the challenge. Also getting the opportunity of working with various individuals, both young and old who challenge you to become better is something I love about my wok right now.

I have heard many individuals describe you as ” A man of the people”. What do you have to comment on that? Yes, to some extent, i believe that if i have been described as a likeable character, I have my family to thank for that. Especially my parents since they are both loving and i think I took strongly from them. Also the fact that i interact with individuals across the board also strengthens that ‘tag’.

Onto inspiration matters now: In life, who is your role model? It definitely has to be our Governor, John Mruttu. For the simple reason that I like the way he operates as an individual. Case in point: I am just from my annual leave and have taken my deserved rest. For him,  I don’t even know when he goes on leave. He is a 24/7 kind of guy and someone I believe is just what the doctor ordered when it comes to leading our beloved County.

Globally , Barrack Obama does the trick for me. I find him to be a dedicated leader, non racist, non- partisan and has done his best in leading America during his two terms as U.S President. He has continually proven to be a man of the people.

Your favorite meal – Githeri ya mahindi mabichi mixed with potatoes

Your favorite getaway spot within the County? I have heard of Kilaguni Serena but I have never been there. I would love to go there once and experience the place for myself.

What of your dream holiday destination? Hawaii. Coupled with the fact that my role model (Barrack Obama) was born there, from what i have read and seen on TV, I have an impression that it’s a great place to meet people from all over the world.

In your free time, what do you enjoy doing? I love swimming and listening to music, specifically Reggae music. Any specific favorites? Yeah, Bob Nesta Marley sang a classic names ‘Natural Mystique’. It tugs at my heartstrings every time it plays. I also enjoy football, although the last time I played a proper football match was over 12 years ago (in 2002). Table tennis is another sport i love taking part in.

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring? Water, novel and Qur’an.

If you were 80 years old, what would you tell your children?  Education is the key to success and to fear God.
